Mud Scrapers (or Boot Scrapers)

Why Important

Although not needed today, due to better drainage and paved footways, they are, nevertheless, a key feature of period homes.

What to look for

Example of cast iron (black) mud scrapers (Liverpool Liverbird style) on front stepsThe Cast-iron Mud Scrapers (usually 2; one each side of the entrance steps) are found at every main entrance, and are a critical architectural feature of the period.

When to look

How to fix

Restoration is by finding a similar, complete, Mud Scraper and making a copy. Installation is the same as for installation of external railings.

Avoiding creating problems

It is essential that, where existing for a period property, they are NOT removed.
